January is known for fresh starts, setting goals and making plans for a successful year. But sometimes, the most powerful way to ensure you can positively approach the new year and beyond is to prioritise your personal well-being. Forget about resolutions and make this new year all about self-care.

Here's some tips to get you started:

Avoid burnout with mental self-care

Dedicating time to unwind and recharge can stop you from burning out too quickly. As we head into January, it’s only too easy to go full steam ahead with plans and try to tick off our to-do list in record time. But dedicating time to looking after your mind can help build focus, resilience and a more balanced mindset. Whether it be a quiet moment to yourself with a cup of tea, losing yourself in a good book or journalling about what you’re grateful for, some time to escape the hustle can help keep your mind calm.

Feel your best with physical self-care

Moving our bodies, getting enough sleep and fuelling ourselves with nutritious food make all the difference to feeling our best. It could be a short walk every day or a scheduled gym session. Planning flavourful meals and setting a bedtime routine that helps you wind down: all these habits can lead to more energy, better immunity and feeling healthier too.

Cultivate happiness with emotional self-care

Life is too short to not do things that bring you joy and it’s essential to connect with what makes us feel good and remove things that do the opposite. You should continuously acknowledge how you’re feeling, notice any difficult emotions that arise as a result and work through them. There are plenty of ways to do this:
  • Write down your thoughts and feelings in a journal
  • Catch up with friends or family and talking things through
  • Revisit a favourite hobby to channel your thoughts – creative outlets are a popular way to work through pent up emotions
Once you know how you feel about something, you can look at adjustments to remove any negativity or let it go and move in another direction.

Prioritise your health and wellbeing with a leisure membership

Setting time aside to look after yourself and creating a self-care routine is one of the best investments you can make. Joining a leisure club is ideal, because doing so gives you access to tools you need to focus on your physical fitness, including gym equipment and fitness classes, and also facilities to physically and mentally recover, like a steam room, sauna, and a cosy cafe, where you can read your book or watch the world go by.
