THE RUNNYMEDE ON THAMES:
Things to do in Windsor this spring
21st February 2025

When the flowers start to bloom and the chill of the winter months begins to thaw, discovering the delights that Windsor has to offer is the perfect way to step into spring. Ready to get back out and explore? Here are our favourite picks to enjoy the royal borough of Windsor this spring:

Spend a day at the races
The Royal Windsor Racecourse is set on the banks of the River Thames in the shadow of Windsor Castle and its flat racing season begins on Monday 28th April. Famed for Monday evening meetings April through to October, plus plenty of themed race days throughout the year, be sure to check out their packed calendar of events and plan your visit for a fixture (and perhaps a flutter) to remember.
Looking for something a bit different? On 19th April, the night sky above the racecourse will be transformed into a cinematic storytelling experience through an extraordinary light show called Space Safari. This unique show will feature over 600 drones showcasing an inspiring story of bravery and adventure. Intrigued? So are we!

Meander the museums at Eton college
Take in one of Eton College’s museums or galleries, open to the public free of charge on Sunday afternoons. Head to the Museum of Eton Life, where you can step back in time and learn about the history of the school since being founded in the 15th century. Take a short walk up past Eton College Chapel and you’ll find the Natural History Museum, where you can understand more about the natural world. Round off your museum trip with a visit to the Museum of Antiquities that houses fascinating objects from the ancient world.|
From May, the college also offers heritage tours which guide you through the historic heart of Eton College and features its earliest building and objects.

Amble along the Queen’s Walkway
For those of you who love to get outside and explore on foot, the Queen’s Walkway links 63 of Windsor’s best attractions, features and views. It’s a symbolic 6.373km long, to honour the 63 years, 7 months and 3 days that Queen Elizabeth II reigned, making her the longest reigning monarch. Designed by The Outdoor Trust, the route is approximately 4 miles long and passes the theatre, churches, parks and gardens, and several historic monuments.

Feel like royalty for the day at Windsor Castle
Take a trip to the oldest and largest occupied castle in the world. Welcoming visitors throughout the year, there’s so much to discover here, including the semi-state rooms, St George’s Chapel, the castle precincts and the state apartments that house ceremonial and historic rooms. If visiting on a Thursday or Sunday, you can catch the Changing of the Guard, a colourful spectacle of British pageantry which has been carried out by the guards since 1660.

Wander through Windsor Great Park
Set in over 4,800 acres of Surrey and Berkshire countryside, and stretching from Windsor Castle to Ascot, this impressive landscape is full of sweeping lawns, woodland and ancient oaks. Nature lovers shouldn’t miss the opportunity to book tickets to see the beautiful Savill Garden, a 35-acre haven of gardens and seasonal displays. Visit in March when the Spring Wood comes alive or see swathes of crocus and dwarf daffodils and the stunning flowering Japanese cherry trees throughout April.
